Animal Fighting

A Forensic Science First…

On 14 June 2013, the State of New Mexico won a dog fighting case with guilty verdicts on 21 of a 22 charge indictment (see attached press release) which included guilty on dog fighting, conspiracy to commit  dog fighting, 8 counts of extreme (felony) animal cruelty, 10 counts of misdemeanor cruelty and too many dogs for county ordinance.  The IVFSA’s Dr. Patricia Norris was the expert witness for the State of New Mexico.  Dr. Norris recently completed the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine, Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Forensic Sciences.  As a result of the certificate completion, Dr. Norris was deemed by the court as an expert in veterinary forensics as well as an expert in veterinary medicine.  This allowed specific expert witness testimony about the dog fighting cases since the testimony of Dr. Norris was not limited only to aspects of veterinary medicine.  This case represents the first time a court in New Mexico has deemed anyone an expert in veterinary forensics.
